In August this year, the Diaspora arranged a visit from Derby (in the UK) to their family home region of Djarkpanga. This comprised the Trustees of DDDT, together with other family and friends. This is the first time a visit has taken place for 5 years. They flew into the capital Lome and travelled up to Djarkpanga. Upon arrival, they were welcomed by the local community and thanked for their hard work and dedication in supporting the people of Djarkpanga.
During their visit, the Diaspora were told about the poor conditions of the sixth form; they subsequently paid a visit to see for themselves. When they arrived at the school, they saw that there was no proper seating for the students and the overall condition of the classrooms, including the roof was inadequate. For example, if it starts to rain, the teacher has no option but to dismiss the class as it’s unsafe (as well as uncomfortable) for the students to study (it rains a lot in Djarkpanga). The school committee and the local school community asked the Diaspora for help to fix these classrooms.
These students deserve to be taught in classrooms that meet the basic standards; their education is severely disrupted at the current time.
Following further discussions with DDDT Trustees, it was agreed that addressing the poor condition of the Sixth Form classroom would be a priority for fundraising.
Look out for a new fundraising project we’ll be launching shortly to raise funds to help fix the sixth form in Djarkpanga. You can help to make a difference to these young people in Togo simply by making a donation here.
